Backstory:
Muffled Straw was born in the heart of Tennessee in 2015 when a group of college friends, all majoring in different fields, found a common love for music. The band members include frontman Joey “Rooster” Roberts, a psychology major; keyboardist Amy “Wrench” Winston, an engineering prodigy; drummer Max “The Sheriff” Shaw, a criminal justice enthusiast; bass guitarist Jake “Doc” Davis, a pre-med student; and lead guitarist Penny “Poet” Phelps, a literature lover. The name ‘Muffled Straw’ was inspired by a sweaty afternoon’s hay bale stacking at Joey’s family farm, where a straw hat was used to muffle Jake’s harmonica sounds. As the harmonica’s melodies seeped through the straw, the friends were energized with a unique, raw sound they desired to capture in their music.
Almost immediately, they began jamming in Joey’s barn, turning it into a makeshift studio. Their late-night jam sessions became popular among their university friends, leading to small gigs around campus, and soon they were playing at local bars and festivals. Their breakthrough came when they won a local band competition, which led to a record deal and their first album. The band’s unique sound, a fusion of their diverse influences, soon attracted a large fan following.
Genre:
Muffled Straw’s music can be best described as a blend of blues, country, and rock – a genre they affectionately call “Blue Country Rock.”
