Grotesque Wife

Backstory:
Grotesque Wife was formed in a small bar in Portland, Oregon, in the late 2000s. The original members, lead vocalist Maggie ‘Mayhem’ Milton, guitarist Roxy ‘Ravager’ Reynolds, bassist Danny ‘Devastator’ Donovan, and drummer Kelly ‘Kraken’ Keen were all regular performers at the bar’s open mic nights. They bonded over their shared love for unconventional music and decided to form a band. Their unique sound quickly gathered a cult following in Portland, leading to a record deal after just a few years of performing together.

Grotesque Wife took their name from a phrase Maggie once used to describe an old, eerie painting she saw in a thrift store. The band members loved the contradictory images the name conjured: the traditional domesticity of a wife and the unsettling nature of the grotesque. This juxtaposition mirrors the band’s own sound, which combines familiar rock instruments with unconventional harmonies and eerie, surrealist lyrics.

Title:
“Carnival of the Ordinary”

Full Song Lyrics:

(Verse 1)
Am (Cadd9) G D
In the carnival of the ordinary, she dances alone,
She’s got a heart full of secrets, and a mouth full of stone,
See her spinning in an echo, under a paper moon,
She’s the queen of the night, in the light of the afternoon.

(Chorus)
G D Am C
Grotesque wife, in your ordinary life,
Do you dream in colors, or just black and white?
Grotesque wife, with your extraordinary strife,
Do your tears taste salty, or just like the night?

(Verse 2)
Am (Cadd9) G D
With her phantom lovers, she waltzes through time,
A silhouette of emotions, in a pantomime,
She’s an angel in the tower, a devil in the street,
She’s the ghost in the mirror, that you’re too scared to meet.

(Chorus)
G D Am C
Grotesque wife, in your ordinary life,
Do you scream in silence, or just take the dive?
Grotesque wife, with your extraordinary strife,
Are you lost in the shadows, or just learning to survive?
