Backstory:
Spanish Exchange was formed in the bustling college town of Charlottesville, Virginia during the fall semester of 2010. Zac Simmons, a traveling student from Spain, met locals Mike Thompson, Kate Wilkes, and Sara Lyle in a music theory class. Bonding over their shared love of music and diverse cultural backgrounds, the students decided to form a band, with Zac on lead vocals and guitar, Mike on drums, Kate on bass, and Sara on keyboard and backup vocals. They named their band ‘Spanish Exchange’ as an ode to their combined cultural experiences and the exchange program that brought them together.
The band gained local popularity very quickly, playing at college festivals, local bars and even charity events. Their unique sound, drawing from a mix of cultures and genres, was an instant hit. They have used their platform to promote cultural exchange, urging listeners to appreciate and explore different cultures through music.

Full Song Lyrics:
(Verse 1)
[Am] Wandering through the streets of Granada,
[G] Lights reflecting off the cobblestone,

[G] Feeling foreign, yet not alone.
(Chorus)
[Am] We’re riding the Flamenco waves,
[G] Dancing in the Spanish sunrays,
[Am] Across the miles, across the days,
[G] We’re Spanish Exchange, here to amaze.
(Verse 2)
[Am] The rhythm of life, quickening heartbeats,
[G] Passionate nights, where cultures meet,
[Am] In every note, in every beat,
[G] We find a world that’s incomplete.
(Chorus)
[Am] We’re riding the Flamenco waves,
[G] Dancing in the Spanish sunrays,
[Am] Across the miles, across the days,
[G] We’re Spanish Exchange, here to amaze.
(Bridge)
[F] United by music, divided by land,
[E] We’re singing loud, guitar in hand,
[F] Across the sea, across the sand,
[E] This Spanish Exchange, it’s something grand.
(Chorus)
[Am] We’re riding the Flamenco waves,
[G] Dancing in the Spanish sunrays,
[Am] Across the miles, across the days,
[G] We’re Spanish Exchange, here to amaze.

“I discovered Spanish Exchange during a local festival and have been a fan ever since. Their music is such a unique blend, it’s like they’re telling a story of their own personal journey. As a Spanish language student, I appreciate the combination of cultures in their sound. Their song ‘Riding the Flamenco Waves’ is my personal favorite. It embodies their spirit perfectly – a fusion of the new and the traditional, of America and Spain. Spanish Exchange isn’t just a band to me; they’re an experience, a complete cultural journey.”
