Backstory:
Clever Stranger formed in 2016, brought together by a love for meaningful lyrics and a desire to create music that resonated with people on a deeply personal level. Based in Toronto, the band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Jack Mason, drummer Stella Reynolds, and bassist Larry ‘LJ’ Johnson. The trio had been friends since high school, bonding over their shared passion for music. Jack was a budding singer-songwriter, Stella was an accomplished drummer in her school band, and LJ was self-taught on the bass. They started playing together in Jack’s basement, and their chemistry was immediately apparent.
Their early recordings were lo-fi and raw, but they quickly gained a loyal following on local radio and online platforms, where fans were drawn to their evocative lyrics and melodic hooks. The band spent the next few years playing at various local venues, honing their craft and experimenting with their sound. In 2019, they released their debut album, ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, which was well received and solidified their place in the local music scene.

Title:
One of Clever Stranger’s most loved songs is “Mirrors and Smoke”.
Lyrics:
(Verse1)
[G] Looking through the mirror, [D] seeing my mistakes,
[Em] Trails of faded memories, [C] choices that we make.
[G] Smoke is in the air, [D] blurring out the lines,
[Em] In the face of the stranger, [C] I’m trying to find.
(Chorus)
[G] Mirrors and smoke, [D] life’s cruel joke,
[Em] You think you know, [C] but it’s all a hoax.
[G] Unravel dreams, [D] or so it seems,
[Em] In the mirror’s gleam, [C] we’re more than we’ve been.
(Verse2)
[G] Shattered pieces on the floor, [D] reflecting broken dreams,
[Em] Smoke is rising higher, [C] muffling the screams.
[G] In the eyes of a stranger, [D] I see my disguise,
[Em] Behind mirrors and smoke, [C] truth often lies.
(Chorus)
[G] Mirrors and smoke, [D] life’s cruel joke,
[Em] You think you know, [C] but it’s all a hoax.
[G] Unravel dreams, [D] or so it seems,
[Em] In the mirror’s gleam, [C] we’re more than we’ve been.
Fan Testimonial:
“I’ve been a diehard fan of Clever Stranger since their early days playing at local pubs in Toronto. As someone who appreciates thoughtful lyrics and engaging melodies, their music resonated with me instantly. I’ve been to every one of their concerts within a 300-mile radius. My name is Ethan, and Clever Stranger is my favorite band because they fearlessly tackle deep subjects in their lyrics. They’re not just musicians to me, they’re poets with a guitar, a drum set, and a bass.”
