Disastrous Grip

Backstory:

Disastrous Grip, originally formed in 2012, is an amalgamation of childhood friends, who grew up in the industrial town of New Castle, Pennsylvania. The band members include lead singer and guitarist Seth Mason, drummer and backing vocalist Kyle Johnson, bassist Ryan O’Connor, and keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Lucy McAllister. Each member of the band had a voracious appetite for music and a hunger to create something new and different. Their friendship took a creative turn one summer when they decided to form a band, rather than spending their time hanging out in their small town. They started off playing at local clubs and small parties, gaining a faithful fan base who loved their unique sound. Their struggle to break out of their small town life and their yearning for something more significant is reflected in their emotionally charged, raw music.

Title:

“Chains of Yesterday”

Full song lyrics with chord progression:

(Verse 1 – G, D, Em, C)
In our old town, under the rusted crown,
(G, D, Em, C)
Dreams were like smoke, vanishing with a choke.
(G, D, Em, C)
Used to wander the streets, listening to our heartbeats,
(G, D, Em, C)
Feeling the chains of yesterday, pulling us into the fray.

(Chorus – G, D, C)
Chains of yesterday, won’t you break away?
(G, D, C)
We’re more than shadows in the gray,
(G, D, C)
Looking for a brighter day,
(G, D, C)
Break these chains of yesterday.

(Verse 2 – G, D, Em, C)
In this ghostly town, couldn’t keep us down,
(G, D, Em, C)
We sang our songs, tried to right the wrongs,
(G, D, Em, C)
With every chord, we found our freedom’s road,
(G, D, Em, C)
Broke the chains of yesterday, making our own way.

(Chorus – G, D, C)
Chains of yesterday, we broke away,
(G, D, C)
No more shadows in the gray,
(G, D, C)
Found our brighter day,
(G, D, C)
Broke these chains of yesterday.

(Outro – G, D, Em, C)
Now we sing, in the light of a brand-new ring,
(G, D, Em, C)
With the echoes of yesterday, we found our way.

Their music, especially ‘Chains of Yesterday’, speaks to the struggle of breaking free from your past and shaping your future. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s everything music should be.
