Exemplary Grass

1. Backstory

Exemplary Grass is a band that was formed by a group of college buddies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010. The core members, lead singer and guitarist, Calvin Hughes, bassist Nick Rodgers, and drummer Mike Sanderson, found their shared passion for music during their frequent jam sessions in their college dorm rooms. They decided to form a band, taking the name Exemplary Grass from a term their botany professor used to describe the finest quality of turf. They quickly gained popularity within the campus and their music started to spread beyond the college grounds, gaining them a dedicated fan base.

After their graduation in 2014, the friends decided to take their passion to the next level and pursue their music career full-time. They moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to gain exposure in the music heartland, where they added a new member, violinist Emma Stone. With the addition of Emma, the band’s sound evolved from the traditional college rock to a more unique blend of folk rock and indie pop, creating a sound that is truly their own.

4. Full song lyrics with chord progression (verse, chorus)

[Verse 1 – Em, C, G, D]
There’s a place I know, where the summer sun does glow,
Where the Exemplary Grass does grow, my heart feels something it can’t stow.
Waving in the warm breeze, it’s a sight that never ceases,
A calming melody that releases, the pain inside that decreases.

[Chorus – G, D, C,G]
In the fields of honesty, where the soul finds liberty,
It’s in the wind, in the thrumming tree, it’s in the heart of you and me.

[Verse 2 – Em, C, G, D]
Underneath the open sky, beneath the stars that never lie,
Where the Exemplary Grass meets the eye, there’s a truth that’ll never die.
With every step, with every stride, no secret, no place to hide,
In this open space, so wide, we find a love that won’t subside.

[Chorus – G, D, C,G]
In the fields of honesty, where the truth sets us free,
It’s in the wind, in the humming bee, it’s in the heart of you and me.
