Backstory:
Formed in the heart of Chicago in 2012, Giving Hypothesis is the brainchild of childhood friends and amateur musicians, Jacob “Jake” Strickland and Samuel “Sam” Brown. The two began their journey in a dusty attic with a second-hand guitar and an old drum kit. Teetering between academics and their shared passion for music, they began a creative exploration that eventually led to the formation of ‘Giving Hypothesis’. After testing waters with various gigs in Chicago’s underground music scene, they finally broke into the public eye with their hit single, ‘Ripples in the Silence’, in 2014. Since then, they’ve expanded their band, adding bassist Michelle “Mitch” Peterson and keyboardist Daniel “Danny” Stuart to their lineup.
Genre:
Giving Hypothesis is primarily an Alternative Rock band, but they often incorporate elements of Indie Pop and Progressive Rock into their music.
Title:
“Shadows in the Sunlight”
Full song lyrics:
[Verse 1]
G5 C9
Wake up to the break of day,
G5 D9
Walking that same old way,
C9 D9
Long shadows in the sunlight,
E5 C9
Where do we turn when we’ve lost sight?
[Chorus]
G5 D9
In the shadows, in the sunlight,
C9 D9
Where do we go, when there’s no light?
G5 C9
In the shadows, in the sunlight,
D9 E5
Is it here we find, is it here we find right?
[Verse 2]
G5 D9
Dreams held in a clenched fist,
C9 D9
Are they ever more than just a wish?
G5 C9
When dawn breaks, do we take flight?
D9 E5
Or stay in the shadows, hidden from the light?
[Chorus]
G5 D9
In the shadows, in the sunlight,
C9 D9
Where do we go, when there’s no light?
G5 C9
In the shadows, in the sunlight,
D9 E5
Is it here we find, is it here we find right?
[End]
G5 D9 C9 D9
Where do we find, where do we find right?
Fan Testimonial:
The band’s favorite fan is a woman named Lisa, a high school teacher from their hometown of Chicago who discovered their music during their early underground days. Lisa fondly recalls, “Giving Hypothesis is more than just a band to me. Their music has always been a companion, a solace during my hardest days. It’s like they put words to the emotions I struggle to express. ‘Shadows in the Sunlight’ is a song I go back to time and time again. It’s a beautiful representation of their introspective lyricism and soulful sound, it’s just…them.”
