1. Backstory:
Scrawny Spending was born out of the ashes of a failed high school jazz band in the small town of Meridian, Idaho. The four members – Cornelius “Corny” Jackson (lead vocals, guitar), Oliver “Ollie” Peters (drums), Laura “Laurie” Benson (bass), and Marianne “Marie” Fletcher (keyboard, backing vocals) – found themselves with a shared passion for music but no platform to express it. One evening in 2007, after months of mind-numbing, uninspiring band practices, they decided to venture out on their own, and thus Scrawny Spending was formed. The band’s name, a cheeky nod to their humble beginnings and shoestring budget, quickly caught the attention of the local community.
Scrawny Spending started performing in small venues around Meridian, gaining a reputation for their energetic performances and eclectic fusion of pop-punk and indie rock. Their talent didn’t go unnoticed for long – just three years after their formation, they won the local Battle of the Bands competition, which led to a record deal with a major label.
