Backstory:
Substantial Daughter was formed by a duo of childhood friends, Stella Sampson and Fiona O’Reilly, both having grown up in the small, artsy town of Hurleyville, New York. Stella, an indie singer-songwriter, found herself stuck in a creative rut after a series of unsuccessful recordings. Fiona, a classically trained violinist, was also looking for new ways to express herself through music. With a shared love for music and an innate understanding of each other’s sound, they decided to form a band in 2014, naming it “Substantial Daughter” to evoke both their femininity and their commitment to creating substantive, meaningful music.
Their journey was not easy; they faced numerous challenges, from lineup changes to creative disagreements. However, they’ve persevered, using these struggles as fuel for their lyrical content and musical development. Their unique fusion of genres and their raw, unfiltered lyrics have charmed audiences around the world, making them a rising force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

Title:
“Rivers in the Rain”
Song Lyrics:
[Verse 1: Dm, Am]
(Dm) Late last night under a cloudy sky
(Am) The moon hid her face, and the stars were shy
(Dm) We walked by the riverside, just you and I
(Am) In the silence, our hearts beat high
[Chorus: Dm, Am, C]
(Dm) Rivers in the rain, wash away the pain
(Am) Underneath the sky, where dreams never die
(C) Let’s sail away, where love’s in the air
(Dm) Rivers in the rain, we’ll find ourselves there
[Verse 2: Dm, Am]
(Dm) Whispering secrets in the quiet night
(Am) Our shadows tangled in the faint moonlight
(Dm) The water mirrored our silent plight
(Am) In these moments, everything felt right
(Repeat Chorus)
[Bridge: Dm, Am, C]
(Dm) We are but travelers, in this grand universe
(Am) In our hearts, an unspoken verse
(C) Together we’ll conquer, every joy and curse
(Dm) In the rivers in the rain, our worlds immerse
(Repeat Chorus)

Testimonial:
“I happened upon Substantial Daughter at a music festival in 2016 and immediately fell in love with their sound. Their music, a beautiful blend of indie, folk, and rock, resonates with me on so many levels. Their lyrics are deep and introspective, they tell stories that are so beautifully human and touch my soul. The musicianship is top-notch, with Fiona’s violin lines perfectly complementing Stella’s melodic prowess. It’s music that you can both think to and feel to. I’ve been to every one of their shows since then. I can’t wait to see where their musical journey takes them next.”
