Backstory:
Wealthy Merit was formed in 2014 when three friends from art college decided to pursue their shared passion for music. The members, Karl Shepherd (vocalist and guitarist), Mike Riddle (drummer), and Tom Nixon (bassist), started playing in small venues around their hometown, New York City. They began by performing covers but soon started to write their own songs, drawing from their experiences of living in the city and the struggles of adulthood. The band members’ unique art background allowed them to bring a different perspective to their lyrics, often incorporating subtle social commentary and personal experiences in a way that resonates with their audience.

Title:
“City of Dreams”
Song Lyrics:
(Verse 1)
[G] Wandering through the city streets,
[D] Underneath the neon lights,
[Em] Trying to find a piece of mind,
[C] In the city that never sleeps at night.
[G] Every face tells a different story,
[D] Every heart knows a different pain,
[Em] In the city of dreams and glory,
[C] We are all playing the same game.
(Chorus)
[G] City of dreams, city of lights,
[D] Where every day feels like a fight,
[Em] Searching for hope, searching for love,
[C] In the city of dreams that we can’t get enough.
(Verse 2)
[G] Walking through the crowded subways,
[D] Underneath the skyscrapers tall,
[Em] Dreaming of a better tomorrow,
[C] In the city that has it all.
(Chorus)
[G] City of dreams, city of hopes,
[D] Where we learn to tie the ropes,
[Em] Searching for truth, searching for meaning,
[C] In the city of dreams that keeps us dreaming.

“Ever since I discovered Wealthy Merit’s music, I’ve felt a deep connection to their lyrics. I live in New York City and their song “City of Dreams” perfectly describes my experience – the struggle, the hustle, but also the endless hope and dreams that keep us going. Their music has a unique way of expressing the complexities of life while keeping a hopeful tone. I’ve attended their concerts multiple times and the energy they bring on stage is electrifying. Karl, Mike, and Tom are not only incredible musicians but also wonderful human beings. I’ve had the chance to meet them after a show and their humility and kindness were truly inspiring. Wealthy Merit is my favorite band because their music speaks to me on a level that no other band has ever done before.”
