The story

Jealous Rice formed in the bustling food markets of New Orleans, where the four founding members—Avery (vocals/guitar), Jules (bass), Marnie (drums), and Theo (keys)—first met while waiting in line for a bowl of jambalaya. Bonding over their mutual love of spicy cuisine and offbeat jazz, they started jamming together in a cramped apartment above a bakery. Their early sessions were interrupted by the clatter of dishes and the aroma of simmering rice, so they adopted their moniker as a tribute to the city and its most beloved dish.

Blending an eclectic range of influences from funk and indie rock to bayou soul, Jealous Rice soon developed a unique sound characterized by syncopated rhythms, crunchy guitar licks, and infectious hooks. Their live shows are a celebration of community and flavor—fans often bring homemade dishes to share before the music starts, turning every concert into a feast for the senses.

Steam Rises

Song Lyrics (Verse, Chorus) with Chords:

Verse
(G) Early morning, in the city’s (C) crowded arms
(G) Streetcars rattle, heat (D) clings to my palms
(G) Pot on the stove, and my (C) mind’s on the boil
(Em) Jealous rice, you (D) call me back home

(G) Neon flickers in the (C) puddles of rain
(G) Spices swirling, every (D) memory remains
(G) I’m missing the laughter, (C) I’m missing the bite
(Em) Jealous rice, (D) you’re on my mind tonight

Chorus
(C) Steam rises, (G) out the window pane
(Em) All my longing (D) floating in the grain
(C) Stir it up, (G) let the fire burn through
(Em) Every flavor (D) tastes like you

(C) Steam rises, (G) hearts on the line
(Em) I’ll come running (D) every single time
(C) When I need a (G) little taste of home
(Em) Jealous rice, (D) I’m never alone

Biggest fan

Their favorite fan is named Clara Baptiste. Clara has attended every Jealous Rice show since their very first gig at the bakery basement. She’s famous among the band and fellow fans for bringing her grandmother’s gumbo to every pre-show potluck, and her hand-painted banners inspired the artwork for the band’s first EP. As Clara says: “Jealous Rice makes me feel like the whole city is singing with me. Their songs taste like home—spicy, sweet, and unforgettable. Every show feels like a family dinner where everyone’s welcome.”
