Tragic Folk was birthed out of the unlikely partnership of two remarkably different souls – Cliff, the traditional folk artist from the Appalachian Mountains, and Tina, the angsty poet from New York. The two met at a poetry slam in Nashville where Cliff was playing background mandolin for a storytelling group. Tina was on stage, delivering a poem about heartbreak and loss, an emotion so raw, it resonated with Cliff. He was captivated by her voice and her words, and after the event, he approached her with an idea. What if they combined their crafts? The poetry of pain with the soulful sound of folk? They did and thus, Tragic Folk was born.

Lavish Stop was formed in 2012 when four friends from a small town in Maine found a common interest in creating music that was a departure from their roots, yet still carried the essence of their shared memories and experiences. The group was made up of Phil Dawson (lead vocals and guitar), Isabella Norton (background vocals and bass), Jeremy Jacobson (drums), and Matt Matthews (lead guitar). Bassist, Jared Simmons, was an Astrophysics student, and drummer, Alex Harris, was a Fine Arts major.
