Backstory:

Formed in the small coal mining town of Harlan, Kentucky, Costly Coal is a band that has come to embody the spirit of their humble origins. The group consists of four childhood friends – Billy “Coal” Carter (vocals and guitar), Jesse “Spark” Miller (drums), Tom “Shovel” Johnson (bass), and Sarah “Diamond” Wilson (keyboard and vocals). Growing up in a town where coal was the lifeblood, they all shared a deep respect for the miners’ hard work, often spending their teenage years working the mines themselves. The band was formed as a way of expressing their shared experiences, a tribute to their roots, and a message about the human and environmental costs of coal mining.
