Backstory:
Everlasting Advertisement was formed in 2007 when four college roommates discovered a shared love of music and a mutual distaste for consumerism. Lead vocalist and guitarist, Mike Strickland, originally from Texas, was a philosophy major with a knack for poignant lyrics. Bassist, Aaron Douglas, a sociology major from Illinois, had a deep understanding of society and how to connect with people through music. On drums was Henry Marshall, a New Jersey native and psychology major, with a keen sense of rhythm and dynamics. Lastly, the band’s keyboardist, Lisa Vincent, was an English major from California with a poetic soul. Together they set on a journey to create music that not only resonates with the masses but also questions the very fabric of our society and its obsession with consumer culture.
After much work and persistence, their innovative sound and thought-provoking lyrics began to gain traction around their college. Their popularity grew rapidly, and soon they started touring around different colleges, and eventually around the country. Their music served as a commentary on the relentless persuasion of advertisements and the impact this has on society. They became the voice of a generation disillusioned with the constant bombardment of consumerist messages.

“Billboards in the Sky”
Full song lyrics:
Verse 1:
[Am] Images flashing, [G] products selling, [F] hopes and dreams, [G] they keep on telling,
[Am] Walking through the city, [G] my mind is up for rent, [F] An everlasting advertisement, [G] on where my time is spent.
Chorus:
[C] Billboards in the sky, [G] selling us a lie,
[Am] Caught in the reflection, [G] of the consumer’s eye.
[C] We’re all just buyers, [G] in this endless game.
[Am] Lost souls in the market, [G] where everyone’s the same.
Verse 2:
[Am] Looking for the meaning, [G] in a brand-name sign, [F] False sense of belonging, [G] in every product line,
[Am] Trapped in this illusion, [G] A spectacle so grand, [F] Buying into promises, [G] we barely understand.
Repeat Chorus
Bridge:
[D] Can’t we see, [Em] we’re more than what we buy,
[F] Not just consumers, [G] under the billboard sky,
[D] The worth of a human, [Em] not measured in goods,
[F] Let’s break free, [G] from these advertising hoods.
Repeat Chorus
Fan’s Testimonial:
My name is Sarah Thompson and I’ve been a die-hard fan of Everlasting Advertisement since their first gig at our college. Their music speaks to my soul, questioning the societal norms and constant pressure to consume we face daily. Their lyrics are a poetic critique of our consumerist culture, and the melodies are so unique and catchy. No other band I know captures these sentiments so perfectly in their music. It’s not just about the sound, it’s about the message, and that’s why Everlasting Advertisement is my favorite band. Their song “Billboards in the Sky” is a perfect example of this. It’s my anthem, my wake-up call, reminding me to rise above the constant barrage of consumerism.
