Backstory:
Scientific Welfare came to life in the picturesque town of Asheville, North Carolina, in 2012. The band’s four members, which include Dr. Jonathan “Doc” Fields on keyboard and lead vocals, Dr. Helen “Halo” Clarke on bass and backing vocals, Dr. Robert “Rogue” Turner on guitar, and Dr. Amelia “Ace” Simmons on drums, were initially colleagues at a local research institution. Known for their analytical minds and passion for music, the quartet took their love for science and music, combining them to create a unique and intellectually stimulating band.
While spending late nights on research projects, the four would often use music as a soothing therapy to break the monotony of their work. Soon, they discovered their shared interest in music wasn’t just a casual pastime, but a potential path to explore. Thus, Scientific Welfare was born, its name reflecting the band member’s scientific backgrounds and their hope that their music might translate into emotional welfare for their listeners.
Genre:
Scientific Welfare fuses elements of indie rock with an undercurrent of electronic and synth-pop, sometimes coined as “Electro-Indie.”
