Shabby Bank

Backstory: Shabby Bank was formed in the small industrial town of Flint, Michigan, in 2004. The band members, childhood friends, and schoolyard misfits, Mark Jenson (vocals), Timmy ‘Keys’ Kowalski (keyboard), Pete ‘Bassman’ Lendl (bass), and John ‘Drums’ Hargrove (drums) found solace in the world of music amidst the economic decline of their hometown. They named their band ‘Shabby Bank’ as a reflection of the financial turmoil that surrounded them. Their music became a loud, rebellious outcry against the establishment that they felt had abandoned them and their community.

Genre: Punk Rock/Indie Rock

Title: “Bleeding Pennies”

Full Song Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
C G Am F
Living on the edge of a shabby town,
C G F
Dreaming of days when we wore the crown.
C G Am F
Our hearts beat like the factory’s pound,
C G F
In the echo of its ghostly sound.

[Chorus]
G Am F C
We’re just bleeding pennies in a broken bank,
G Am F C
Screaming for change with a rebel’s rank.
G Am F C
Voices loud in the silence, dank,
G Am F C
We’re the sound of a shabby bank.

[Verse 2]
C G Am F
The streets are lined with tales of woe,
C G F
No golden lining, no rainbow.
C G Am F
We’re the seeds in the concrete, ready to grow,
C G F
With a punk rock rhythm and an indie flow.

[Chorus]
G Am F C
We’re just bleeding pennies in a broken bank,
G Am F C
Screaming for change with a rebel’s rank.
G Am F C
Voices loud in the silence, dank,
G Am F C
We’re the sound of a shabby bank.

“Shabby Bank is more than just a band to me – they’re my voice. Their music resonates with my struggle and the struggles of our town. They articulate the feelings of frustration, of being forgotten, and yet, they still manage to instill hope. Their song ‘Bleeding Pennies’ is my anthem – I play it every morning to remind myself to keep going, keep fighting. Shabby Bank isn’t just a band, they’re a beacon of resilience for Flint.”
