Relieved Reading

Backstory:

Relieved Reading was formed in the heart of Chicago, Illinois in 2015, when four literature majors from the University of Chicago decided to blend their mutual love for music and literature. The band members – Oliver (vocals), Harper (drummer), Aldous (bassist), and Virginia (lead guitarist) – would routinely gather at a local coffee shop, share their favorite books, and express their feelings through impromptu jam sessions. Their unique blend of music, literature, and emotion quickly garnered local attention, landing them regular gigs at the coffee shop that served as their creative hub.

In 2017, Relieved Reading released their first EP, a collection of songs each inspired by a different classic novel. Their creative approach to songwriting resonated with a broad audience, landing them a record deal and catapulting them into the indie music scene. Their heartfelt lyrics, emotional melodies, and authentic performance style continue to captivate audiences both locally and globally.

“The Catcher’s Song”

Full Song Lyrics:

(Verse 1)
G C G
In a field of rye, under the sky so high,
Am Em
A young one stands alone.

With a heart full of dreams, and eyes that gleam,

He guards innocence in the unknown.

Oh, the catcher in the rye,

His spirit won’t deny,
C G D
The world of innocence he’s known.
Am D G
His song is a lullaby, reaching the sky,
C G D
In this world where he’s grown.

(Verse 2)
G C G
Through the city’s strife, he seeks the life,
Am Em
Where phony has no place.

Against the world’s relentless pace.

Oh, the catcher in the rye,

His spirit won’t deny,

Testimonial:

“Relieved Reading is my absolute favorite band for so many reasons. Their music is a perfect blend of literature and emotion that speaks directly to my soul. Their song ‘The Catcher’s Song’ is practically my anthem – it’s like they’ve poured all of Holden Caulfield’s emotions into a beautiful melody. I’ve been a fan since their coffee shop days, and watching them grow into the music scene has been wonderful. Their music is both an escape and a homecoming for me. Their lyrics make me see my favorite books in a new light, and their melodies make me feel seen and understood. As a literature enthusiast and a music lover, there’s nothing more I could ask for.”
